Name: Central Peninsula Garden Club program: Growing Haskap Berries, by Brian Olson
Date: February 14, 2017
Time: 7:00 PM - 8:30 PM AKST
Event Description:
Grow fruit at home! Haskap berries are a large berry that tastes like a cross between a blueberry and a raspberry – super delicious! Added bonus – the plant is cold-hardy, and the berries are packed with antioxidants. Come learn tips on how to successfully grow these delightful berries from an expert who has been experimenting and improving his growing techniques from his home and business in Soldotna. Brian Olson’s presentation at the 2016 Master Gardeners Conference in Anchorage received rave reviews. Brian and Laurie Olson own and operate Alaska Berries, the first, and currently only, 100% Alaska grown winery in the state. While researching unique and hardy berry plants, they discovered haskaps and began trials to determine their suitability for South-central Alaska conditions. Results have been a resounding success! Alaska Berries was the first in the U.S. to make a commercially available product (jam) out of the haskap fruit. The Olsons have also branched out to making wine and have plans to produce a haskap juice product. Free and open to the public. Bring your sweetheart; bring a friend! Refreshments and sometimes door prizes. Membership and general club information is available at www.cenpengardenclub.org, on facebook, or contact Renae Wall, cenpengardenclub@gmail.com.
