Event Description:
Central Peninsula Garden Club Program: Balancing Soil Nutrients: Art or Science?, presented by Dr. Dave Ianson. It’s back to gardening basics for the February program of the Central Peninsula Garden Club. Soil scientist Dr. Dave Ianson will speak on the subject, “Balancing Soil Nutrients: Art or Science?” Or as Dave puts it, “What do all those numbers mean on my soil sample results? How do I know what to put on my garden and how do I put it there? Did I know that plants only take up certain forms of nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium no matter what form I put in the soil? What is CEC and pH and did I know they control everything?” For those of us who view soil (some call it dirt!) as that mysterious brown stuff where the miracle of green life begins above ground, Dave will tell us what we need to know down below and what really works on the Kenai Peninsula. Dave is a Soil Conservationist with the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service in Kenai. He earned his Ph.D. and a Post Doctorate at Oregon State University and was professor at the National Autonomous University of Mexico. He has many years of experience with crops, plant diseases and soil microbes. Come learn from an expert how to turn your "dirt" into "soil", and watch your plants thrive! Free and open to the public. Refreshments and sometimes door prizes. Membership and general club information is available at www.cenpengardenclub.org, on facebook, or contact Renae Wall, cenpengardenclub@gmail.com.
